DELETE Requests

DELETE requests are used to remove a specific resource from a server, such as deleting a user account, a post, or an item from a shopping cart.

Making a DELETE Request with Fetch

javascript const response = await fetch('https://api.example.com/users/1', { method: 'DELETE', });

Making a DELETE Request with Axios

javascript await axios.delete('https://api.example.com/users/1');

Confirming Before Deletion

Since deletion is often irreversible, it is best practice to show a confirmation dialog before sending the DELETE request.

javascript Alert.alert('Confirm Delete', 'Are you sure you want to delete this item?', [ { text: 'Cancel', style: 'cancel' }, { text: 'Delete', style: 'destructive', onPress: () => deleteItem(itemId) }, ]);

Updating the UI After Deletion

After a successful DELETE request, the deleted item should be removed from local state immediately to reflect the change without requiring a full data refetch.

javascript async function deleteItem(id) { await axios.delete(`/items/${id}`); setItems((prev) => prev.filter((item) => item.id !== id)); }

Handling Delete Errors

If a DELETE request fails, such as due to a network error or server-side restriction, display a clear error message and avoid removing the item from local state prematurely.

Conclusion

DELETE requests allow users to remove data safely from your application’s backend. Combining proper confirmation dialogs with immediate UI updates creates a responsive and trustworthy deletion experience.
