GraphQL Basics

GraphQL is a query language for APIs that allows clients to request exactly the data they need, offering an alternative to traditional REST API design. This tutorial covers the basics of using GraphQL in React Native.

What is GraphQL?

Unlike REST, which exposes multiple fixed endpoints, GraphQL exposes a single endpoint where clients send queries specifying exactly which fields they want returned.

graphql query { user(id: 1) { name email } }

Installing Apollo Client

Apollo Client is the most popular library for integrating GraphQL into React Native applications, handling caching, queries, and mutations.

bash npm install @apollo/client graphql

Setting Up Apollo Client

javascript import { ApolloClient, InMemoryCache, ApolloProvider } from '@apollo/client'; const client = new ApolloClient({ uri: 'https://api.example.com/graphql', cache: new InMemoryCache(), }); function App() { return ( ); }

Running a Query

javascript import { useQuery, gql } from '@apollo/client'; const GET_USERS = gql` query { users { id name } } `; function UserList() { const { data, loading, error } = useQuery(GET_USERS); if (loading) return ; return {item.name}} />; }

GraphQL vs REST

GraphQL reduces over-fetching and under-fetching of data by letting clients specify exactly what they need, while REST relies on multiple fixed endpoints that may return more or less data than required.

Conclusion

GraphQL, combined with Apollo Client, provides a powerful and flexible way to fetch exactly the data your React Native application needs, reducing unnecessary network overhead compared to traditional REST endpoints.
