Cloud Messaging

Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) is a cross-platform messaging solution that allows you to reliably deliver notifications and data messages to React Native applications on both Android and iOS.

Installing Firebase Messaging

bash npm install @react-native-firebase/messaging

Requesting Permission

javascript import messaging from '@react-native-firebase/messaging'; const authStatus = await messaging().requestPermission(); const enabled = authStatus === messaging.AuthorizationStatus.AUTHORIZED;

Getting the FCM Token

javascript const token = await messaging().getToken(); console.log('FCM Token:', token);

Saving the Token to Your Backend

javascript await firestore().collection('users').doc(userId).update({ fcmToken: token });

Handling Token Refresh

javascript messaging().onTokenRefresh((newToken) => { updateTokenOnServer(newToken); });

Sending a Test Message

Test messages can be sent directly from the Firebase Console’s Cloud Messaging section, or programmatically through the Firebase Admin SDK from your backend server.

Subscribing to Topics

javascript await messaging().subscribeToTopic('news');

Conclusion

Firebase Cloud Messaging provides the underlying infrastructure for reliable push notification delivery in React Native applications, forming the foundation for the notification handling covered in the next tutorial.
