Redux Introduction

Redux is a predictable state container widely used for managing complex application state in React and React Native applications. This tutorial introduces its core concepts.

Why Use Redux?

Redux centralizes your entire application state into a single store, making it easier to debug, test, and reason about how data flows through a large application compared to scattered local state.

The Three Core Principles

  • Single Source of Truth – The entire app state is stored in one central store object.
  • State is Read-Only – The only way to change state is by dispatching an action.
  • Changes are Made with Pure Functions – Reducers are pure functions that specify how state changes in response to actions.

Actions

Actions are plain JavaScript objects describing what happened, typically containing a type field and any additional data needed.

javascript const incrementAction = { type: 'INCREMENT' };

Reducers

A reducer is a pure function that takes the current state and an action, then returns a new state based on the action type.

javascript function counterReducer(state = { count: 0 }, action) { switch (action.type) { case 'INCREMENT': return { count: state.count + 1 }; default: return state; } }

The Store

The store holds the application state and provides methods to dispatch actions, subscribe to changes, and read the current state.

javascript import { createStore } from 'redux'; const store = createStore(counterReducer); store.dispatch({ type: 'INCREMENT' });

Conclusion

Understanding Redux’s core principles of actions, reducers, and the store provides the foundation needed before exploring Redux Toolkit, the modern and recommended way to use Redux in React Native applications.
