Deep Linking

Deep linking allows your React Native app to open a specific screen directly from an external link, such as a URL, push notification, or another app, rather than always starting from the home screen.

What is Deep Linking?

Deep linking maps a custom URL scheme, or a standard web URL through universal links, directly to a specific screen and set of parameters within your application.

Configuring a URL Scheme

A custom URL scheme, such as myapp://, must be configured in both the Android and iOS native project files to allow the operating system to route links to your app.

Setting Up Linking Configuration in React Navigation

javascript const linking = { prefixes: ['myapp://'], config: { screens: { Home: 'home', Details: 'details/:id', }, }, }; {/* Navigator */}

Testing Deep Links Locally

Deep links can be tested using adb on Android or the simulator’s URL scheme handling on iOS during development.

bash adb shell am start -W -a android.intent.action.VIEW -d "myapp://details/42"

Universal Links and App Links

For production apps, universal links (iOS) and app links (Android) allow standard https:// URLs to open your app directly instead of a web browser, requiring additional domain verification setup.

Handling Deep Links from Push Notifications

Deep linking is also commonly combined with push notifications, allowing a tap on a notification to navigate directly to relevant content, such as a specific chat or order details screen.

Conclusion

Deep linking significantly improves user experience by allowing external links and notifications to navigate directly to relevant content within your React Native application, rather than forcing users to manually navigate from the home screen.
