Session Management

Session management ensures that a user’s login state persists across app restarts and is handled securely throughout their time using the application.

Storing Session Tokens

Authentication tokens should be stored using secure storage solutions like react-native-keychain rather than plain AsyncStorage, especially for production applications.

javascript await Keychain.setGenericPassword('authToken', token);

Checking Session on App Startup

javascript useEffect(() => { const checkSession = async () => { const credentials = await Keychain.getGenericPassword(); if (credentials) { setUser(await validateToken(credentials.password)); } setLoading(false); }; checkSession(); }, []);

Handling Session Expiration

When a token expires, either based on a stored expiration timestamp or a 401 response from the API, the user should be redirected to the login screen and the invalid session data cleared.

javascript function handleSessionExpired() { Keychain.resetGenericPassword(); setUser(null); }

Auto-Refreshing Sessions

Combining session management with a refresh token strategy allows sessions to be silently renewed in the background, avoiding unnecessary logouts for active users.

Multi-Device Session Considerations

Some applications need to track and manage sessions across multiple devices, requiring server-side session tracking in addition to local token storage on each device.

Logging Out Properly

javascript async function logout() { await Keychain.resetGenericPassword(); await AsyncStorage.clear(); setUser(null); }

Conclusion

Proper session management, combining secure token storage, expiration handling, and clean logout logic, is essential for providing a secure and seamless authenticated experience in React Native applications.
