React Native Architecture Explained

Understanding React Native architecture is essential for building efficient, high-performance mobile applications. This tutorial explains how React Native connects JavaScript code with native platform capabilities.

The Three Core Threads

React Native traditionally operates using three main threads:

  • JavaScript Thread – Executes your application logic and business code.
  • Native (UI) Thread – Handles rendering of native UI components on screen.
  • Shadow Thread – Calculates layout using the Yoga layout engine before passing it to the native thread.

The Bridge (Legacy Architecture)

In the traditional architecture, communication between JavaScript and native code happens through a bridge. This bridge serializes data into JSON format, sends it asynchronously between threads, and then deserializes it on the other side.

While functional, this approach can introduce performance bottlenecks, especially for applications requiring frequent, high-speed communication such as animations or gesture handling.

The New Architecture: JSI

React Native introduced the JavaScript Interface (JSI), which allows JavaScript to directly call native methods without serializing data through a bridge. This significantly improves performance and enables synchronous communication when required.

Fabric Renderer

Fabric is the new rendering system in React Native that works with JSI to make UI updates faster and more efficient by allowing direct, synchronous access to native components.

TurboModules

TurboModules replace the legacy native modules system, allowing native modules to be loaded lazily and accessed directly through JSI, improving app startup time and runtime performance.

Why Architecture Matters

Understanding this architecture helps developers write more performant code, choose the right libraries, and debug complex issues related to rendering, animations, or native module communication.

Conclusion

React Native architecture has evolved significantly from the traditional bridge-based system to the modern JSI-powered architecture with Fabric and TurboModules. This evolution makes React Native faster, more efficient, and better suited for building complex, high-performance mobile applications.
