React Native vs React.js

Many developers new to mobile development often confuse React Native with React.js. While both share the same core philosophy and syntax, they are used for entirely different purposes. This tutorial clarifies the key differences between the two.

Purpose

React.js is a JavaScript library used to build interactive user interfaces for websites, rendering standard HTML elements in the browser. React Native is a framework used to build native mobile applications for Android and iOS.

Rendering Target

React.js renders components as HTML elements like <div>, <span>, and <button> in a web browser. React Native renders components as real native UI elements such as View, Text, and TouchableOpacity on mobile devices.

javascript // React.js (Web) function App() { return
Hello Web
; } // React Native (Mobile) function App() { return Hello Mobile; }

Styling Approach

React.js uses standard CSS or CSS-in-JS libraries for styling. React Native uses the StyleSheet API with a JavaScript object syntax that closely resembles CSS but does not support all CSS properties.

Shared Concepts

Both React.js and React Native share the same core concepts, including components, props, state, hooks like useState and useEffect, and a virtual DOM-inspired rendering approach for efficient UI updates.

Navigation

React.js typically uses libraries like React Router for handling page navigation within a browser. React Native uses dedicated mobile navigation libraries such as React Navigation to manage screen transitions and stacks.

Deployment

React.js applications are deployed as websites accessible through a browser. React Native applications are compiled into APK or AAB files for Android and IPA files for iOS, then submitted to app stores.

Conclusion

While React Native and React.js share the same underlying principles and syntax, they serve completely different platforms. Understanding React.js provides an excellent foundation for learning React Native, since the transition mainly involves learning new native components and mobile-specific concepts rather than a completely new language.
