IPA Generation

An IPA (iOS App Store Package) is the file format required for submitting React Native applications to the Apple App Store or distributing them through TestFlight.

Archiving Your App in Xcode

text Xcode Menu -> Product -> Archive

Exporting the IPA File

After archiving completes, the Organizer window allows you to select "Distribute App," choosing between App Store Connect, Ad Hoc, or Enterprise distribution methods.

Distribution Method Options

  • App Store Connect – For submitting to the App Store or TestFlight
  • Ad Hoc – For distributing to specific registered test devices
  • Enterprise – For internal company distribution outside the App Store

Generating an IPA from the Command Line

bash xcodebuild -workspace ios/MyApp.xcworkspace -scheme MyApp -configuration Release archive -archivePath build/MyApp.xcarchive xcodebuild -exportArchive -archivePath build/MyApp.xcarchive -exportPath build -exportOptionsPlist ExportOptions.plist

Validating the IPA

Xcode’s Organizer provides a "Validate App" option that checks your build against common App Store submission requirements before you actually upload it.

Uploading to App Store Connect

The validated IPA file can be uploaded directly through Xcode’s Organizer, or using the Transporter app, to make it available in App Store Connect for review submission.

Common IPA Generation Issues

Common problems include provisioning profile mismatches, missing required Info.plist keys, and code signing certificate issues, all of which typically produce clear error messages during the archive or export process.

Conclusion

Generating a properly signed and validated IPA file through Xcode’s archive and export process is the required step before submitting your React Native application to the Apple App Store or TestFlight.
