JSON in JavaScript

JSON stands for JavaScript Object Notation. It is a lightweight data format used to store and exchange data between systems. JSON is easy for humans to read and write, and it is also easy for machines to parse and generate.

Although JSON is derived from JavaScript syntax, it is widely used in many programming languages such as Python, Java, PHP, and C#. In modern web development, JSON is commonly used for sending data between a server and a web application.

What is JSON?

JSON is a text-based format that represents structured data using key-value pairs. Its structure is very similar to JavaScript objects.

Example of JSON data:

json { "name": "Rahul", "age": 22, "course": "Computer Science" }

In this example:

name, age, and course are keys
"Rahul", 22, and "Computer Science" are values

Why JSON is Used

JSON is widely used in web development because it allows data to be easily transferred between client and server. When a user interacts with a website or mobile application, data is often sent and received in JSON format.

For example, when a website loads user data from a server, the server usually sends the data as JSON.

JSON vs JavaScript Object

Although JSON looks similar to JavaScript objects, there are some differences.

JSON keys must always be written inside double quotes.
JSON supports only data, not functions.
JSON is used for data exchange, while objects are used inside JavaScript programs.

Converting JavaScript Object to JSON

JavaScript provides the JSON.stringify() method to convert a JavaScript object into JSON format.

javascript let student = { name: "Rahul", age: 22, course: "Computer Science" }; let jsonData = JSON.stringify(student); console.log(jsonData);

Output:

output {"name":"Rahul","age":22,"course":"Computer Science"}

Converting JSON to JavaScript Object

To convert JSON data back into a JavaScript object, we use the JSON.parse() method.

javascript let jsonData = '{"name":"Rahul","age":22,"course":"Computer Science"}'; let student = JSON.parse(jsonData); console.log(student.name);

output Rahul

JSON with Arrays

JSON can also store arrays of data.

json { "students": [ {"name": "Rahul", "age": 22}, {"name": "Amit", "age": 21}, {"name": "Priya", "age": 23} ] }

This structure allows multiple records to be stored inside a single JSON object.

Using JSON in Web Applications

JSON is commonly used with APIs and web services. When a website sends a request to a server, the server often responds with JSON data.

Example of receiving JSON data from an API:

javascript fetch("https://api.example.com/users") .then(response => response.json()) .then(data => console.log(data));

This allows developers to display dynamic data on web pages.
