Memory in Agents: The Missing Layer Between Chatbots and Autonomy
Why memory changes everything
A chatbot answers what you ask right now. An agent needs to operate across time. That means it must remember: the goal, the progress so far, past decisions, and user preferences. Without memory, autonomy is an illusion—you’re just re-prompting a stateless model.
Types of memory you’ll actually use
- Working memory: what the agent is holding “in mind” during a run
- Long-term memory: durable facts and preferences across sessions
- Vector (semantic) memory: similarity-based recall using embeddings
- Episodic memory: past experiences + outcomes + lessons
Memory is also a liability
Saving the wrong thing can break trust. A production agent must have:
- User consent rules
- Data minimization
- Expiration/retention
- Ability to correct/forget
The golden rule
Store summaries, not transcripts. Raw chats are noisy and risky. Summaries are compact, safer, and easier to retrieve.
